Wow, thats a disgrace! However i must say that i am very impressed with the serivce you got from O2 over the issue when you raised it with them. I am just about to leave Orange after TEN years, to go to O2. Its a scary prospect but your story gives me a bit of hope that i will be happy with O2. I need the iphone so i can sync business and home machines and be in touch with many different email accounts on the go, as well as forums and web stuff. Nothing compares with the iphone no matter how many poeple and companies seem to try to tell us! Here goes the Iphone and here we go to O2!!
Thanks for sharing your experience, i hadn't considered insurance, but will be thinking carefully about that tomorrow when i go for the iphone!
Thanks again, Martin

Since moving from PC to Mac, I've never looked back but a lack of streaming content from the likes of 4OD (and there are others) is highly inconvenient.

Hi guys, Im Ryan Crossland from PC World in the centre of Leeds...yeah - ok so "PC World" I know, however im directing a major re-vamp of the apple section.
As a MacBook Pro, an iPhone and a MacPro user I class my self as an apple buff (geek to be accurate).

In 2 weeks time we are having a dedicated apple section playing host to all of the current apple computing range and a large majority of the software!
Feel to pop in at any time and ask me what you want, more than happy to answer...

AND KEEP ME UPDATED WITH THE APPLE STORE!!! - not that I would apply for a job there or anything :D

Phil,

Thanks for the great comment, glad you enjoyed the show and hope you will continue to enjoy what we're doing with BUMP and our new project International Mac Podcast (www.impodcast.tv)

I really get what you're saying about the Blackberry, yeah I got the data plan prices wrong - oops! I think the main thing that would make the iPhone come out on top is a company that has Windows Mobile deployed, which uses ActiveSync already, they would have to do very little to switch to the iPhone.

One thing I've noticed about the Blackberry (my father has one for work) is that it's still a very business based mobile OS, whereas the iPhone OS is, in my opinion at least, much more user friendly.

We will see what happens, I could see RIM developing a BlackBerry client for the iPhone, maybe?

Take care

Just Listened to your podcast and really enjoyed it, thanks. Just thought I'd mention Blackberry data plans are circa £20 for Corporates and nowhere £60! As regards iPhones on MS Exchange bear in mind mail admins may have to enable a 'service' at the Exchange end, and chances are many won't if they already have a BES (the Blackberry Enterprise Server bolt on to Exchange) as it'l be something else to go wrong.

Also, Blackberry is a VERY mature and established product which has a heck of lead, not unlike the old VHS verses Beta story, Vodafone Corporate and 02 have invested millions in Blackberry support depts so there is already a very powerful support infrastructure in place that won't go away any day soon. Blackberries typically have 3-5 day battery life where as I'd be lucky to get day out of my own iPhone if I'm using data, not to mention how much more robust most Blackberries are .

Personally I doubt RIM are too worried, most business users are already locked into Blackberry, not unlike the Windows verse Linux choice in commercial environment, at the end of the day it often comes down to support availability and costs rather than bells and whistles. The decision will be taken by IT Directors looking to control supports costs, not some Sales Johny who fancies a new gadget!

Something else I can't understand is why people rattle on about 3G, we have various 3G devices and they tend to EAT batteries not mention it's pretty flakey on the move! Edge is fine for email and web browsing, in fact to be honest GPRS is fine for email, look at Blackerry's absurd success, I don't know what percentage of the corporate mobile device they have but I'll bet it's around 70-80%.

What would be far more interesting is to see RIM produce a Blackberry Client like they did for the P900 and some of the Nokias, now that WOULD be a serious jaw dropper......

Douglas

I agree with you whole heartedly about the language Chris Leydon used in this week's episode, it is something I raised with him and I can assure our listeners it won't be happening again. I would, however, defend Chris's input into the show, I feel he offered some interesting views on the discussion and was in general a good panelist.

In terms of the language itself, I thought I'd caught most of that in the edit (as you'll hear with the cartoon boing) so I do want to apologise to anyone who is offended by that. If our listeners would prefer I would be happy to go back to the edit and remove any further profantiy and repost? Please let me know

Thanks for your comment Douglas, very much appreciated

A real shame about the 'potty talk in this week's podcast', especially as you say have minors who listen, if this is the case you really ought to edit out the 'F's or better still don't invite him back. (He didn't seemed to know what he was talking about in any case!)

I completely agree that Mac|Life is the best Apple magazine out there. The sarcastic comments are definitely the best part. My personal favourite has to be from the iWear review: "Cons: Expensive, makes you dizzy. Just like drugs."

Ohk, i agree that 3G would be awesome, and a BIG selling point for the iPhone, but what makes you so sure that AT&T + Apple will have it on the iPhone by the end of the year?

GPS on the iPhone might be a greater selling point for the iPhone than 3G. Especially for 'avarage joes', like my dad for example. Who have the iPhone, but find it annoying to have the "best mobile device in the world" yet have to use a TomTom or a simalar device to get them from here to there.

VoIP on the iPhone would be good, but I think its kind of like why Apple & AT&T didn't include an IM app at launch. (because they wanted people to use SMS more, instead of IM) People would be allways using Skype or other VoIP servies to make calls, and, although nice for long distance, AT&T would never allow it. You said above that it would might be part of the data plan or something. That is a good idea, but knowing Apple, and the fact that they now have control over apps. in the future App. Store, unless Skype makes a direct deal with AT&T, VoIP on an iPhone has an extreamly slim chance of happening. For now, i think that forwarding calls to the phone is enough.

Video is what we really need in an iPhone. The N95 is a good phone, but its hard to use it for business needs like email with the small keys.

GPS would be awesome, since its touchscreen, and has a big screen for a GPS when on landscape, agree?

I really want video. I envy you being able to stream all the time from Qik on your N95 while all of us using iPhones are left out.

The google maps new locate feature is usually pretty good, even without GPS, but real GPS would be better.

Connor, I think I said enough about video, so I didn't want to about it even more, but there are rumors of "iPhone Pro."

Robert, Skype should be either part of the data plan, or something along the lines.

Thanks!

Remember iCreate. It looks great, really handy for tips and tricks and even has step-by-step projects for you to do (with media on a free disk for you to play with!) - which is great when you are trying to get to grips with some of the more complex aspects of some of the apps. Oh, and there's always funky things to be had on the above-named free disk!

I assure all that I do not hold any shares in this publication! ;oP No, seriously I don't!

What was wrong with Daniels audio it sounded like he was in a can or something. You said you were using Gizmo which I have found to be crap with audio and record. Just because it uses less processor doesnt mean quality should suffer. Skype has the best quality of any VOIP app I have ever seen.

I'm thinking that apple will allow 3rd parties to produce a chat client.
BUT,
Only Apple's own app's can run in the background while you use other apps.
SO,
using Apple's own chat client will allow you to keep it chat open while surfing or using other app's on your phone.
Very handy for a chat client, being able to stay online while using other apps I think.

(have yet to listen to the show, so if this has been said I apologize)

The crippled and expensive iPhone here in Ireland is no surprise to those of us who live here.

All consumer electronics in Ireland are more expensive than the UK and US, and the communications network is a virtual monopoly. Broadband cost and availability is terrible, with 1MBps being the standard and 3Mbps the highest domestic speed commonly available in many places-- unless you live outside a town, in which case you can more or less forget anything other than satellite broadband. And there are next to no uncapped domestic broadband services available, so it's no surprise that the iPhone data plans are capped too.

Luckily for those in Ireland who want an iPhone (which doesn't include me), the UK is just a short car, bus or train ride away...

Reference the Chat client you mentioned in the show, you may also find that there could be something in their contracts with the iPhone carriers not to produce a chat client but the get out might be that someone else can.

When I tell people BUMP first they go"What did you say to me: but when I say "British Users Of Mac Podcast" they say "o its a british show". It just doesnt make sense you say "American Correspondent" when you can report the same way on news in the UK

I thought the ads were great! Liked the American ones too, and certainly didn't think Apple should have pulled them in the UK. Mind you, I think the act of pulling them may have given them an 'air of mystery' and actually BOOSTED their status over here in the UK :0)

Nice to have the British accent versions too - too many US accents on TV these days - my daughter sounds like she's from America these days.....

Great podcast. Heard in the show of Daniel's issue with USB Alesis on the mac. I use Behringer UCA202 with Behringer ub2442pro and Peavey -PV10 USB. When Apple went to 10.4.11, they changed the USB and Firewire drivers. This caused errors in the data going to the computer. Check posts on apple forums at http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6758138#6758138
I have used a work around on 10.4.11 that put 4.10 USB back onto Tiger. This also works on 10.5.2. The work around can be removed and reapplied. I have recorded 10 hours since and no static or weird echo issues. You can see my studio rig at my photo page.
Keep up the great work! Hope this helps.

Ray,

You ask why have a non-British co-host, well we've always had one since the early days, Billy HIme, however Billy isn't doing as much with us anymore and as such we wanted someone who could relate some of the US news to us.

We are working behind the scenes on BUMP, as a team we want a high quality show, if our panel includes non British people then so be it, we never said it would be exclusive.

Thanks for your comment

Agree,

It's sickening when you see some products converted from $ to £ and the actual numbers in the price hardly change. I know we have VAT and shipping, but considering that most things these days are made in China it could be a little fairer.

Some companies are worse than others (Dell) but all of them seem to use the VAT excuse to add more than %17.5 to the price of goods.

The new iPhone tariffs released by O2 are actually for the Republic of Ireland and not the whole of Ireland, I think some people are forgetting that N.I got the iPhone at the same time as the rest of the UK and on the same tariff.

Even so, the plans on offer for R.O.I are a disgrace.

Re the ridiculous pricing of the iPhone and the tariffs in Ireland and the CEO's comments about the value of the product. I think what she (I guess it's a she) was trying to do is to backup the high prices that they are charging.
There must be some other reasoning behind the price but at this point I don't think anyone can work it out. As for the iPhone sales this will not help Apple 10 mill target.

Agree Stu,

If not free we should get it for a token payment, but that's never going to happen because next we'll be wanting the dvd box set's for for free as well... LOL

I hope they get the iPlayer downloads and the Mac issue sorted out soon, but the iPhone integration is excellent news.

The BBC make some excellent content, now everyone can enjoy it...
AT A PRICE :-)

Sorry I couldn't be at you last podcast I was otherwise engaged :-).
Good one guys,
Dave I had the same thing with SpeedDownLoad, I took a different route I went into TimeMachine and pulled back the previous version, worked a treat!
I'd love to know what Mikael King thought about your Carol Smiley conversation!

Here's a link to some issues to the 10.5.2 update !
http://www.macfixit.com/

And here's a link to a podcast by the HTGUYS podcast they have a bit of a review of the Apple TV on it, and overall it comes out well. The podcast Number you need is 250 15th Feb 2008.

Now as for the slight delay in TimeCapsule it has been reported that Apple has seen unexpected demand as it is listed on the UK store as it's second biggest selling mac product
http://www.macworld.co.uk/mac/news/index.cfm?newsid=20416&pagtype=samechandate

Now you two don't have kids, I cam assure you sometimes 24 hours is not enough time to watch a film :-).

Why does everybody go on about the Drobo let me put it into context it's 330.54 on Amazon add the network sledge at 179.95 and then you have to add your hard drives ! Come on guys there are better options, as you'd have to have at least enough drives to swap out the data and store those drives off site. Phew sorry rant over!

I think the pod 32GB and the phone 16GB are good choices ....
Why not?

I have a 8GB pod since about two and half months is update and i enjoy it lot ...
Is no to much capacity Ok ....
At less I need only WI-FI to have new music or use safari...
I don't need my computer anymore.
And if i use it only for songs i can have a no to bad music library and with WI-FI and safari i can have a bit social life ...

mosenmori,

Daniel is indeed acting as our US correspondent, we asked him to join the show on the strength of his own podcast and also because he's a pretty decent guy.

Hope you enjoy the shows, and are as excited we about having Daniel on the show
and the blog!

Shame I don't need the minutes or the txts so a price plan of 25.00 per month would have meant me going out tomorrow and spending my money, but keeping that price level just means I'll have to live with a iPod Touch when I finally get to the States.

Fantastic! I await your post with bated breath. I did some legal work for Apple last year and got £4K worth of Apple vouchers through the post last week as a thank you or as a mistake: whatever happens they are getting spent before I get asked for them back! :oD I'm looking at that MacBook Air but everyone's telling me it's a bad idea! And a new Mac. Looking forward to your post as I'm a boreing barrister with no clue as what to get!

@Alex

Thanks glad you are enjoying the show!

I have the same problem if it doesn't have a webclip it doesn't get an add.

I found that hard as Facebook did not support one untill recently. I did come across a site though where users have posted a way of getting webclips for sites that don't have them using forwarding and other such methods.

The site is http://www.networkadvanced.com/webclips/index.php not the nicest of sites but helped me out with facebook.

In response to your other comment about a new mac look out for a post I will hopefully be submitting tommorow about which laptop is right for you!

So you can't really buy something online safely then if it doesn't have the facility to connect an rj45 cable to it... I certainly wouldn't buy something on the net using a wifi connection.

Hey if they reach 300,000 raised for charity yet another App has been added to the Macheist Bundle something called VectorDesigner which looks a cool app, something you'd like to try but would never spend the money on if your just (like me) doing the odd bit of work unpaid freebie for magazines etc etc. So if you haven't checked Macheist out head over there now!

At our work we have 7,500 + laptops, they are business machine running XP. They have an optical drive, we cannot install anything unless we have Admin rights, no-one in our office has used the optical, some people have done some backup's but that did not last long, as they have bought small HD's to backup to, every business unit we have has fast wireless connect, anyone coming to the office from another BU never uses an ethernet to connect, the drives on our machines 40GB, they have 1GB Ram these machines are less than a year old, a lot of the Apps we use are connections through the web. The battery life is never enough we we go abroad, the weight is a REAL pain I KNOW. Can you see where I'm going with this!
Apple YOUR MACBOOK AIR ROCKS.
Well Said Chris.

Hey Guys I purchased this before the latest add on app Wingnut (you also get a Golf Game Magic Mini Golf) which I have now downloaded, for a new user these are great so timing for me is perfect.

I would say that you guys could do a few Podcasts on how best to use these apps, I'm thinking in particular Pixelmator and Speeddownload, but hey any of them would be a good idea.

Even you only have one or two of these apps the price is great and you can of donate those apps you have already to someone else!

Cool guys I can recommend it.

That is interesting reading, I think we are all critical because we get used to " things the way they are ".I like the Macbook Air, what a wonderful piece of technology but I don't need one, yet. The advances in technology are wonderful, many moons ago I stood in a soundproof booth listening to the latest 45 by some guy called Cliff Richard then took home my purchase to play it on the worlds biggest gramaphone that took up huge amounts of space. Now I have almost an entire music collection on a couple of things no bigger than a fag packet.

They don't make cars like they used to, thank God

Stu I do get cheap int calls so it's perhaps a possibility the reason I asked is because I have a better headset on my phone than I currently have for the PC, so thanks for responding. :-)
As Dick DeBartolo (I think that's right) from Gizwiz would say "I'll be there"

I've been thinking that the apple TV should have a HD drive, but they need to bump up the HD capability first, then it would have mass market appeal.
Blue Ray has the lead but HD is not dead yet.
Get Aaron's sound level a bit higher next time guys.

Agree guys no good running anti virus these days as viruses get round the world so quickly the update will be too late. Best to run a hardware firewall, AND BE CAREFUL when surfing!

I think a hardcore gamer will build his own machine and spend the rest on games!!

Of course Apple loves diversity, but they have a long way to go I can assure you, especially compared to the company I work for.

Soon guys your gonna have to mark your podcasts "EXPLICIT" !

Crikey if any other podcasts gets sponsored by Audible I'm gonna scream!

As for the Adium we recently used Adium with the video add on, and connected to someone via video on MSN, the option is called some thing like MeBeam.

Hey and I've told you I have a Fon Router and all my Fon access is Free! WooHoo. It all depends how you sign up (I'm whats called a Linus) you can become a Fon supplier (Bill) you then would get credit for anybody using your Fon Signal.
The two Channels work fine with eachother. You can limit usage and how much bandwidth you let out on your Fon router.

This is great news for all UK iTunes users. The price will go from 79p a track to 66p, which is pretty big price drop. Let's just hope that video will reduced as well.

It's all part of being an Apple fan! Apple are one of the few companies out there that are pushing tech forward and that's why there is so much interest in what's coming next from the Cupertino company.

I love all the hype and trying to second guess what's going to be released and , and getting it totally wrong : ) That's why Apple are such an exciting company!

What talk about covering all angles this is one thing that I can't get my head round in the Apple world, rumours and more rumours it's like a room full of gossiping old women (no offense to gossiping old women of course lolz).
Why can't we just wait and see, I suppose kudos comes into it, as I'm sure some sites will say hey look see we told you so.
I'm looking forward as much as anybody to what will come out of Macworld, but it's just that waiting to see what comes out.
Still I suppose Apple loves it as it keeps their name in publicity.
Keep it up guys this even after what I've just said is still fun :-)

I think the Film companies are cutting their own throats so I'm with you, I think Apple and iTunes has proved make it easy make it reasonable and people will go legit, however make em feel ripped off and they'll get round and find a way where they don't pay.
I'm gonna find a Windooozzzeee PC and see if it's hidden under some directory I can't see on the Mac (however I doubt it)

Gaz

That's a shame, you know it may just be on the US release, I know that sadly we don't always get the same features, example being 'Big Fat Liar' there's an interview with Frankie Muniz on the US release, but not the UK one, which sucked.

I'm still very much in the 'it's your DVD, your ipod, rip it' camp, and I know that will cause some people to call me a pirate, but hey!
